Eclectic Homeschooling

We are an eclectic homeschool family. What this means is that what we utilize to learn and teach with can change day by day or even minute by minute. One area which changes greatly is history, we have used regular text books along with a variety of other books. Books which contain factual information on specific topics along with fictional and non-fictional stories. None of these however seem to spark an interest in my boys. We have taken field trips to places offering history which also holds no interest. They fly through and say OK we're done and that's it. Movies spark more of an interest with them along with interactive games on the internet. While these are not bad ways to learn they are limiting and also sometimes do not offer enough knowledge on a topic. They like to play board games and we have looked at some, but no purchase has yet been made. I have asked the boys what aspects of history they are interested in and they really are not, they like science much better. The history which does interest them contains weapons such as the Samurai warriors or the Knights. However, history needs to be learned somehow. Today we are visiting the library and they will be encouraged to view historical movies along with books based on history. The point? While our children may not be interested in a particular subject as teachers it is our responsibility to find a way, anyway in which to get this information to them. We can give them boring dull material which goes in and leaks back out or find a way to be sure something somehow will stick. This is my mission.
